Young Scot began as a pilot project funded by the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment Initiative, aiming to answer the basic question ‘What next?’ for school‑leavers. Early pilots in Glasgow and Edinburgh paired digital surveys with local mentors, gathering data on aspirations, skill gaps, and barriers. The initial findings revealed a disconnect between curricula and employer needs, prompting the first formal report that would steer the organization’s strategic direction.
Building on that momentum, Young Scot launched its flagship Q&A portal in 2009, inviting young people to submit queries ranging from apprenticeship routes to civic participation. By 2013 the platform had logged over 15,000 questions, prompting the introduction of targeted workshops and the Young Scot Awards, which celebrated individuals who turned curiosity into community impact. This period cemented the organization’s role as a bridge between youthful inquiry and tangible career pathways.
